Universal Studios Orlando has an amazing selection of attractions. From massive thrills to sophisticated dark rides, a trip here is more than worth the price tag. Are you planning a trip to Disney World and considering adding a few days at Universal to your itinerary? These are the best rides at Universal Orlando.
As a side note, we don’t have children so the attractions we’ve chosen are – in our opinion – the best rides at Universal Studios Orlando for adults. There’s no kiddie stuff on this list.
If you’re curious about Universal Orlando’s sister park, head over to our post on the best rides at Islands of Adventure.
the best rollercoasters at Universal Orlando
The best place to start is with the thrills. If, like us, you’re adding Universal Studios to your holiday because you want to tick some bigger coasters off your bucket list, this is the section for you.
Revenge of the Mummy
Revenge of the Mummy is a rollercoaster with a twist. Part high-speed rollercoaster, part immersive dark ride. This thrilling adventure takes you deep into the movies with incredible animatronics and spellbinding special effects.
Carl spoke in detail about this ride in his Universal Orlando hits and misses post so I won’t ramble on too much. But suffice to say this ride is just totally amazing, with so many shocks along the way.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit
Dominating the Universal Orlando skyline, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is a thrilling and fast rollercoaster that reaches high-speeds of 65 mph.
The thing that makes Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit unique is that you can select a song to blast into your ears as the coaster goes round the track. There’s tonnes of genres to choose from and the addition of one of your favourite songs makes this such a fun experience.
Make sure you hold on though, as this one can get a little rough and bumpy.
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
Set in the stunning Diagon Alley, one of the best themed areas in Universal Orlando Resort, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is an incredible indoor rollercoaster that uses screens, projection and special effects to tell the story of Harry Potter and his friends stealing a horcrux from Gringotts Bank.
The only thing that stops this being our number one ride in the world is the fact that the screens are more obvious than they are on Forbidden Journey in Islands of Adventure – and that’s just nit-picking if we’re honest. This ride has one of the best queues in the world as well. The experience really does start the second you join the line.
The best motion simulator rides at Universal Orlando
Universal Studios is often criticised for its reliance on 3D and motion simulator rides. They can be considered a cheap way to fill a park, however if done right – which many of Universal Orlando rides are – they are a thrilling, immersive experience. These are the best motion simulator rides at Universal Orlando.
The Simpsons Ride
Ahhhh, how I wish I could ride Back to the Future: The Ride, but unless you have a real-life DeLoreon that happens to be a time machine, it’s not going to happen.
That said, I love its replacement, The Simpsons Ride. Some people don’t like this, and that’s fair enough, but it’s a must-do for any Simpsons fan. Funny, exciting and packed-full of in-jokes and nods to the series.
Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon
To many fans of the park, this might seem like a rogue choice. As it’s generally considered to be a bit of a failure.
Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon is exactly what it says on the tin; a race through New York with TV host Jimmy Fallon. We had quite low expectations of this one but thought it was great fun in the end. The queue is full of things to do, from live bands and games to character meet and greats.
As we’re from the UK a lot of the characters and jokes were a bit lost on us but we still enjoyed this one. It’s much better than Fast and Furious, the most recent addition to the park.
The best dark rides at Universal Orlando
Last but not least is dark rides. In fact, many of the rides above could be classed as dark rides too, but these are the best selection that don’t have a motion simulator or coaster element.
This is actually a train that takes you between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. But it’s transport with a twist.
Each cabin features a window which comes alive once the journey begins with scenes right out of the Harry Potter films. This is a simple attraction done brilliantly and the section with the Dementors is worth the journey alone.
Men in Black: Alien Attack
Men in Black: Alien Attack is a shooting interactive dark ride in the World Expo Section of Universal Orlando.
Sure this ride is a little dated, but it’s a great blast from the past for any millennial visiting Universal Orlando. Shooting all the aliens is great fun and it’s actually really hard to get a decent score on this one which makes it genuinely challenging for adults. A definite must if you’re nostalgic for the nineties.
